A very impressive, monumental antique 18th Century VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) Dutch Colonial carved teak & brass mounted Governor's chest, circa 1780.  This fine Dutch Colonial chest would have been owned by one of the VOC's island governors, it is made of solid heavy teak and is fitted with pierced hand-cast brass plaques & corner brackets, the plaque to the top and the front having the VOC's monogram. The lid lifts up to reveal a storage reservoir and two storage tills at each side, the lid locks with a key that has a chiming alarm to the inside of the twin locks, having pierced escutcheon plates. The skirt has been native carved with a foliate design and has traces of polychromed decoration. Under the carved skirt are rolling wheels, the chest has a substantial cast brass carrying handle at each side. The chest is of an unusual & impressive size and with the extraordinary brass ormament and alarm ringing locks suggests that the chest belonged to an individual of very high rank.
