The Farnese Hercules (Ercole Farnese) is a Roman marble copy of the early 3rd century, the work of the Athenian sculptor Glycon, of the original bronze work created by Lysippus in the 4th century BC. C. It was found in 1546 in the Baths of Caracalla, in Rome and immediately became part of the collection of classical sculpture of Cardinal Alejandro Farnesio, son of Pope Paul III. The original is in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. In Greek mythology Heracles was a hero and demigod, son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene. In Roman mythology he was called Hercules. It can be said that he was the greatest of the mythical Greek heroes, the paragon of masculinity par excellence, his extraordinary strength being one of his attributes. He was, according to Pausanias, the last child that Zeus fathered with mortal women in Greece. Many stories are told about his life, the most famous being that of the twelve labors of Heracles. His Etruscan equivalent was Hercle, a son of Tinia, the god of lightning, and Uni (the Roman Juno).
