Absorbent fabrics are useful for a variety of sewing and craft projects. Their ability to naturally attract and retain water makes them ideal for items like towels, bath mats, cloth nappies, reusable sanitary products and other moisture-absorbing products. Some of the best absorbent fabrics include cotton, hemp, bamboo, and microfibre which are particularly effective at moving water into both the spaces between and inside the fabric fibres. Cotton, hemp and bamboo are all natural fibres that help keep the fabric breathable and temperature regulated, with bamboo even being naturally antibacterial. Microfibre is fast wicking but also light weight and quick to dry which makes it useful for sewing projects that will need to be regularly washed without the use of a tumble drier to help speed up the drying process. When used in combination with other fabrics, absorbent fabrics can be used in a multitude of ways. For example, a waterproof backing material can be paired with an absorbent fabric to create a bath mat that effectively soaks up water while protecting the floor underneath. In the case of reusable cloth nappies or sanitary products, fleece or other similar fabrics are often used to wick moisture away from the skin, towards the absorbent fabric at the centre. This absorbent layer is then sandwiched between fleece on the top and waterproof fabric underneath, (such as polyurethane laminate fabric), on the bottom to prevent any leaks.
