It was intended for personal travel in the United States, England, and Western Europe. Technically known as a diptych dial, it has a wooden two-part case comprised of an upper leaf (sometimes called the top leaf) and a lower or horizontal leaf (sometimes called the bottom leaf or horizontal dial) that are hinged to close to protect the interior string gnomon, gnomon dials, and compass when not in use.
