Sean joined the Royal Navy at 18 having developed his love of the outdoors in a local marine cadet unit from the age of 11. Following the loss of his leg in 1999 after a field gun accident, Sean fought to be retained in the Royal Navy, competing in the 2016 Invictus Games, until choosing to retire in 2019. He continues to compete on the indoor rowing machine and holds many world titles as a PR3 indoor rower, as well as a para-powerlifter.
