King%20and%20Queen%20of%20Hearts%20Love%20Series%20%20%20Issue%20Date%3A%20May%208%2C%202009%20City%3A%20Washington%2C%20DC%20Although%20he%20lost%20the%20American%20colonies%2C%20England%26rsquo%3Bs%20%26ldquo%3Bmad%26rdquo%3B%20King%20George%20III%20inspired%20one%20of%20history%26rsquo%3Bs%20best-known%20characters.%20King%20George%20suffered%20from%20porphyria%2C%20a%20crippling%20disorder%20that%20is%20often%20accompanied%20by%20seizures%2C%20hallucinations%2C%20and%20paranoia.%26nbsp%3B%20Little%20was%20known%20of%20the%20illness%20at%20the%20time%2C%20and%20George%26rsquo%3Bs%20increasingly%20erratic%20behavior%20caused%2018th-century%20tongues%20to%20wag.%20Charles%20Lamb%2C%20who%20secretly%20battled%20mental%20illness%20himself%2C%20published%20The%20King%20and%20Queen%20of%20Hearts%20in%201805.%26nbsp%3B%20Written%20in%20the%20style%20of%20a%20children%26rsquo%3Bs%20nursery%20rhyme%2C%20the%20poem%20was%20actually%20a%20political%20satire%20mocking%20King%20George%20and%20his%20queen%2C%20Charlotte.%20It%26rsquo%3Bs%20unlikely%20the%20king%20was%20aware%20of%20the%20poem.%26nbsp%3B%20George%26rsquo%3Bs%20decline%20into%20madness%20was%20sealed%20by%20the%201810%20death%20of%20his%20favorite%20daughter%2C%20Amelia%2C%20who%20died%20following%20her%20attack%20of%20St.%20Anthony%26rsquo%3Bs%20fire%20(poisoning).%26nbsp%3B%20Ironically%2C%20Lamb%20also%20succumbed%20to%20the%20painful%20disease%20in%201834.%20The%20King%20and%20Queen%20of%20Hearts%20later%20appeared%20as%20characters%20in%20Lewis%20Carroll%26rsquo%3Bs%20popular%201865%20novel%2C%20Alice%26rsquo%3Bs%20Adventures%20in%20Wonderland.%26nbsp%3B%20One%20of%20its%20most%20avid%20fans%20was%20England%26rsquo%3Bs%20Queen%20Victoria%2C%20the%20grand-niece%20of%20King%20George%20III.%26nbsp%3B%20In%20spite%20of%20the%20inventor%26rsquo%3Bs%20attempt%20at%20satire%2C%20the%20King%20and%20Queen%20of%20Hearts%20became%20synonymous%20with%20love%20during%20Victoria%26rsquo%3Bs%20reign.%26nbsp%3B%20%20%26nbsp%3B%20%20%26nbsp%3B
