Two of them will play significant roles in the collection: Rowan Berry and Devil’s Club. Today, a look at Devil’s Club. Devil’s Club is a powerfully protective plant that is used in ceremony for protection and spiritual healing. It’s botanical name translates to “shield for all”, showing its historical use as a ward against evil. In fact, hanging a piece over your doorway is said to ward off evil. And there will be a Devil’s Club talisman! Indigenous people of the area still use the charcoal and ash made from the wood for ceremonial and protective face paint. Devils Club is also believed to purify and imbibe the wearer with luck. There will be “holy ash” as well! The shrub is COVERED in little spikes, the leaves, stems, wood, all of it. And getting a poke from one of those can often cause infection, so we can easily see the use of it as a protective friend. I did not harvest any of it while we were there, as I was (smartly) respecting the boundaries that it holds. I sourced the gorgeous wood from a local PNW plant lover who “intentionally harvested in spring and fall under a full moon with good intentions”. I can’t wait to show y’all the talismans, which will have a cool Beltane association as well. I worked on them yesterday and the process drained away every bit of stress I had from a weirdly difficult week. I actually had this feeling of feeling “fixed”. I know how that sounds, but that was the vibe.
